Why the language matters
Whether you moved here for work, for family or for study, a legal matter in a second language costs you twice: once in worry and once in translation. The details that decide a matter are usually the hardest ones to put into a language learned as an adult. A first consultation, the documents in your file and the questions that come afterwards can all be handled in German. Papers that arrive in German — a court decision, a registration certificate (Meldebescheinigung), a marriage or birth record from a German registry office — can be read without waiting for a translation.
Court proceedings themselves are conducted in English and the court provides its own interpreter. What changes is everything around them: the consultation, the documents, the questions you were afraid to ask because you could not find the words.
